With margins as tight as a few hundred votes in some swing districts, we all know by now that every vote counts! There’s an untapped resource out there too—millions of Americans are living overseas and many of them don’t realize they can vote! If you know a left-leaning American who is overseas and is

• on sabbatical
• in the military
• temporarily abroad during the November election

The No Kings coalition,  announced that October 17 will be a day of “coordinated, nonpartisan action across the country to drive early voting.” As organizers explained:

Rather than one more date for massive, made-for-media events, the organizers have set their sights on generating thousands of local events “working toward a common goal: making sure every eligible voter has a plan to vote early (where possible), knows their options for how to vote, and is ready to make their voice count by casting their ballot.”

• A federal judge said in a filing Friday that a Trump administration order for FEMA to cut its staffing nearly in half was illegal. (CNN, 9/1/26)
• The recent state audit out of Georgia found that the voter rolls were 99.9% accurate; another state debunking Trump's baseless claims of noncitizen voters swaying elections. (MS NOW, 9/3/26)
• Trump loyalist Joe diGenova, the prosecutor brought in to lead the Justice Department's far-fetched grand conspiracy case against Trump's foes, has resigned his position. (AP, 9/10/26)
• The FCC's attempt to suppress Jimmy Kimmel's tv interview with James Talarico, the Texas Democrat running for the U.S.Senate, has had 9 million views since it was posted to YouTube. (Variety, 9/12/26)
• Longtime Republican strategist Karl Rove announced that he would vote for Democrat Jon Rosenthal in the Texas Railroad Commission race rather than Republican Bo French. The race is significant because the Commission oversees Texas' powerful oil and gas industry.  (Newsweek (9/16/26)
• District Judge Cooper blocked the Kennedy Center board from inscribing Trump's name on the Center, ruling that Congressional approval is required and ordering 30 days notice of any physical changes to the building. The Hands Off the Arts organization rallied protestors to form a human chain by holding hands to protect the building from demolition. (ABC News, 9/16/26)
• The nation’s major television networks are declining to participate in White House pool duties moving forward in response to the Trump administration’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO from the White House. (Politico, 9/21/26)

An early vote is a banked vote!

We urge you to vote the first day of in person early voting if possible.  Early Voting begins on October 19.  Polling places for early voting will not be the same as your usual voting day polling place.  You can check with the town clerk’s office or Secretary of the State for those locations.

Given the unsettled status of the President's Executive Order requiring mail-in ballots to be monitored by the USPS, the CT League of Women Voters recommends that all voters make a plan now and keep all their options in mind.  

If you vote by Absentee Ballot, Track your returned absentee ballot at MyVote.CT.gov/lookup. On that page, you will be able to see if your absentee ballot was received by your Town Clerk.

• Connecticut and two dozen other Democratic-controlled states filed another lawsuit challenging Trump’s executive order to limit mail voting in the midterms.  Attorney General Tong said “...we’re suing again to block USPS from carrying out this illegal directive." (CT Mirror, 8/26/26) 
• Trump’s bid to overhaul mail-in voting ahead of the midterms is on hold once again. U.S. District Judge Talwani ruled late Thursday that the plan to use the USPS to limit mail-in voting would impose onerous new requirements on states without enough time to implement them — potentially disenfranchising large numbers of voters. (Politico, 8/27/26)
•  A leaked classified assessment by the heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force and leaders of the U.S. Pacific Command, European Command and Southern Command cited concerns formally known as a "non-concur." The report to Secretary Hegseth warns extending operations in Iran is unsustainable and is draining America’s ability to defend itself from threats elsewhere—and at home.  (WP, 8/30/26)

The East Hartford Democratic Women are holding a demonstration at the Huskies football game this coming Saturday (Sept. 12) from 2-3:30 at the entrance to Rentschler's field at Silver Lane and Simmons.

· In a special election, Democratic candidate Brandon Dukes flipped a Pennsylvania state House seat held by Republicans for almost 30 years.(The Hill, 8/19/26)

· Progressive state Rep. Angie Nixon scored a major upset in the Florida Democratic Senate primary, setting up a race against Republican Sen. Ashley Moody. (NBC, 8/18/26) And Vermont is the latest state to see Democratic primary voters choose an anti-establishment candidate for governor in Amanda Janoo, a 38-year-old economist and political outsider with a progressive platform. .(Vermont Public, 8/12/26)

· Amid record-low polling, a new projection shows Trump's net approval rating is negative in 47 out of 50 states according to The Economist and YouGov. His net approval rating is minus 26. (MS NOW, 8/24/26)

Upcoming Gen Z fundraiser

Coming Sept 23 or Sept 24!

Project Undeniable Background:  Young voters (18–28) care about key issues, but standard political campaigns miss them because they haven’t donated and they aren’t connected with political parties.   However, we know 70% of them align with values of the democratic candidates.   Wisconsin’s 3rd district is a key swing district ………In Wisconsin’s 3rd District alone, it is anticipated 91,000 of the 119,000 eligible young voters will be overlooked simply because regular campaign avenues don’t have a way to reach them.  Instead of embracing abstract civic duty, they connect around their existing concerns, - affordability, AI job threats, reproductive rights, and current high-profile news such as the Epstein files, the Iran war and tariffs on Canada. 

Project Undeniable, in conjunction with Activate America, has developed a way to reach young potential voters through targeted ad technology on platforms these young people already engage with.   They will be “tapped” via social media accounts they already use 50 times prior to the election.    It will also help them discover the democratic candidates in their district whose values align with theirs, as well as the “power” of their vote when they plug in their zipcode (the only private piece asked) Check this out (U26.vote).

We have worked closely with Activate America (a data driven non-profit organization for our post carding and phone banking) over the years and we are once again working with them to help raise money to reach this important but very difficult cohort of voters.  

Please look for an upcoming zoom program and fundraiser to be held Sept 23 or 24 and spread the word.   We all recognize the importance of the Gen Z voters, but we also know our typical approach of post carding and phone banking doesn’t reach this group.  We need your help.  Please join us on this unique project!    

Every dollar you give is the spark that turns a generation's conviction into a counted vote.  Invest now and help us convert these young, often-ignored, citizens into resolute voters.

• The Justice Department confirmed it delivered unredacted Epstein-related records directly to a federal judge for review. It is the latest development in a lawsuit brought by MeidasTouch host Katie Phang, challenging the government’s Epstein-file redactions. (MeidasTouch, 7/30/26) 
• Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche issued a written order Sunday formally rescinding the administration's proposal for a $1.776 billion fund for victim claims of political prosecutions. (WP, 8/3/26) Without this written confirmation that the fund was dead, Republican Senators Cornyn and Tillis would not vote to advance his nomination for Attorney General out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. (AP, 8/3/26)
• Congresswoman DeLauro called the federal SAMHSA grants “an amazing victory.” The federal agency had cancelled $2 billion in grants in January, only to have the decision reversed a day later after a national outcry.  Milford and New Haven organizations will now receive funds to provide services to youth who have experienced trauma and adverse childhood experiences. GMLKCI/GHS/TALK SOCIAL LANDMARK BUS TOUR

GMLKCI is actively engaged in furthering our mission to educate and empower

our fellow Glastonbury citizens. In this pursuit we are working with our partners to

plan a one-day bus tour of civil rights and social justice landmarks in Connecticut.  

Together GMLKCI, the Glastonbury Historical Society, TALK, and Glastonbury 250th are proud to announce a Social Justice Bus tour.  We want to be certain that this history is part of the story that is told of Glastonbury, Connecticut and America!

The tour, which will take place on Saturday, September 19th from 8:30-3:30, will be guided by Dr. Martha Harris, an expert on inclusiveness, diversity and history and is open to all Glastonbury residents and others who want to join.

The itinerary includes:

·  Start at the Glastonbury Historical Society, where a docent will speak about the

· Senator Andy Kim (D-N.J.) unveiled a proposal for all American children to receive Medicare, a program he calls MediKids. The MediKids Act would automatically enroll every child into the program at birth and provide continued eligibility until the age of 26. (The Hill, 7/21/26)

Candidate Conversation, Monday, July 27

The two Democratic primary candidates for the 31st Legislative District, endorsed Moise Carelus and petitioned Anthony DiLizia, will participate in a Candidate Conversation, Monday, July 27 at 7 p.m. at the Riverfront Community Center, 300 Welles Street., Glastonbury.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Bob Rader, President of the MLK Community Initiative, will be the moderator.  Both candidates will answer the same questions and members of the audience will also have a chance to submit questions. The candidates will address such topics as affordability, growing the economy, health care, housing, energy and environmental concerns, and education. 

The formal program will be from 7 to 8:15 p.m. with time to speak with the candidates one-on-one, following the event.

Our community support team has done a lot of work to secure legal representation and help prepare bond applications for two neighbors who were recently kidnapped by ICE. Now that the applications are submitted and bond hearings have taken place, we need to focus on raising funds to help with bond payments in the case (hoping!!) that they are granted. Shout out to New Haven Legal Assistance Association (NHLAA) and The American Immigrant Legal Clinic (TAILC) for representing our neighbors in court!

Bonds recently granted that we have known of have been anywhere between $1500–$20,000. Please contribute what you’re able to and share with your networks so we can fundraise to help as much as possible. HDD's usual support per family limit is $1500, this will allow us to go beyond that.

Help Register Voters in South Carolina

Our democracy is under attack and this regime wants to use control of the elections as a way of installing permanent autocratic rule. They want to intimidate people and return to the era of Jim Crow, where the electors pick their voters, not voters electing their leaders.

You may feel helpless, but you don't have to. First of all, you can vote. Second, you can encourage others to vote. And finally, you can join me between Sept. 18-Oct. 2 to help register voters in North and South Carolina. These are the voters that will make the difference. We will be supporting the NAACP rollout of ‘We the People,’ a $20 million get-out-the-vote campaign across 14 states — including competitive states like Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Texas — and 33 congressional districts, with the goal of reaching 6.5 million Black voters.

I am leaving Sept. 18 for Charlotte, NC and returning Sept. 26. You can go when you are able but we are hoping for a commitment over at least a full weekend. Our lodging will be covered so you have to pay your way there and help with communal food costs.

Our work will consist of some door-to-door teams to sign up voters, educate them on the slate, and see if they need a ride. Other work will consist of being at events and signing up voters. Most likely it will be a mix of these things.

On Tuesday, July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Houston, Texas.  On Tuesday, July 13, ICE shot and killed Johan Sebastian Guerrero, a Columbian national, living legally in the US., in Biddeford, ME

ICE is counting on us to believe their lies and to let Lorenzo’s, Johan’s, and all the others', stories fade into the background of a crowded news cycle -- but we need to make it impossible for them to get away with it. 

Our Glastonbury rally on July 25 will remember the latest victims of this horrendous injustice.  We invite our faith leaders, immigrant families, workers unions, candidates and elected officials to join us in honoring these slain members of our immigrant family and demanding that federal agents cease non-urgent vehicle stops.  Bring messages of hope, prayers for peace and demands for ICE to cease these vicious attacks.

Connecticut Notches Third Straight Legal Win Over Trump

Connecticut secured back-to-back court victories over Trump-era executive orders that sought to impose new restrictions on voter registration and mail-in voting

·  The “Great American Fair” flopped, while the All of Us 250 crowd was loud and proud marching in D.C.

·  U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla blocked the Department of ‘Justice’ “from obtaining identifying information and sensitive medical records belonging to people who received gender-affirming care as minors in New York City.”

·  U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell blocked a new rule from the Trump administration that would limit grad student loans based on the field of study.

·  U.S. District Judge Casey Pitts has ruled that the federal government cannot make arrests at immigration courts.

·  District Court Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan blocked DHS “from using its citizenship database to remove voters from registration rolls.”

Thank you to the great speakers at the TACT forum on The Inside Scoop on the State of the Press: Meeting the Moment in this New Age of Information and Misinformation.  More than 60 people turned out to hear our panel: Susan Campbell, independent journalist; Bruce Putterman, publisher of the CT Mirror, Attorney Mitchell Pearlman, Freedom of Information expert; and Jacqueline Rabe Thomas, Reporter, CT Insider who served as moderator.

One of the pillars of democracy is a free and independent press.  As such, support for independent media is essential.  We very much appreciate all the great work and investigative reporting by the CT Mirror and urge people to support them with readership and donations.

At least three races near you have more than one candidate and will have a primary.  These include:

·  Governor’s Race Between Governor Ned Lamont and State Rep. Josh Elliot

·  Congressional Race in CT-1 between Congressman John Larson, former Hartford mayor Luke Bronin, State Rep. Jillian Gilchrest, and Hartford school board member Ruth Fortune

·  State Rep in the 31st district between Councilman Anthony DiLizia and Democratic nominee and soccer coach Moise Carelus

You must be a registered Democrat and live in the district to vote in these primaries.  (Everyone can vote in the Governor’s race.)

It’s a good time to study the issues and make your voice heard.
